Paying for yourself
Just because you don’t have health insurance, it doesn’t mean you can’t have swift access to private hospital treatment. Private treatment can be just as accessible by paying for yourself. We can arrange this for you.
All treatment costs are transparent and covered by a one-off payment – and are more affordable than you might think.
Accessing hospital treatment is simple, with our clear and transparent pathway for treatment:
You have a medical problem and DON’T have health insurance. Contact us for more information or to book an appointment.
- Your initial consultation
This will take place at a Clinic of your choice. There is a one off payment for this appointment. The cost for an initial consultation for uninsured UK patients is £200. Please bring to the consultation details of any medical history or problems you may have previously had together with copies of any recent X-Rays and MRI scans. Complex medical problems, revision cases, second opinions or complex or longer consultations, medical negligence and medico-legal reports are charged a higher fee.
- Tests and investigations
You may need further tests, X-Rays or an MRI scan. X rays and blood tests can be taken on the day. Am MRI scan can usually be booked a day or two in advance. Charges for these will be charged directly from the hospital.
If you need surgical treatment, this will be arranged at a time to suit you. If you are paying for the procedure yourself and are not insured then at your request you will be provided with a fixed procedure price which will include the cost of the Hospital charges, the surgeon and the anaethethetist’s fees. An additional package of post surgery physiotherapy and rehabilitation can be provided if requested. The terms and conditions of the package depend upon those of the chosen hospital but usually include a guarantee for the inclusive costs of the hospital stay.
All rehabilitation and aftercare undertaken during your hospital stay for the initial orthopaedic problem and surgical procedure should be included within your treatment package. The Hospital will also has a program of included aftercare (within the Terms and Conditions of the Hospital).
- Interest free loan to cover treatment.
We can also arrange for a loan to cover the costs of the medical treatment. Our financial partner First Medical Loans offers interest-free loans, to help pay for all or part of your treatment. There is no deposit required and you simply pay back the cost of your treatment with 6 or 10 equal monthly payments, completely interest free. If you opt for a loan for all or part of your treatment then the loan will be paid directly to the hospital of your choice, enabling you to go ahead with your treatment without a delay or worrying about payment. Interest Bearing loans are also available over 1-3 years. The advisors at First Medical Loans can help you to work out what the best options are. In many hospitals you can also complete this application with a member of the customer services team, either in person or over the phone. This is an online application and can provide an immediate decision regarding loan approval. Contact the hospital chosen for your surgery and ask for the First Medical adviser.

Increasingly patients without private medical insurance are opting to fund their own medical treatment in the private sector. Following an initial consultation and subsequent investigations, a diagnosis will be made and a management plan formulated. Based on this plan a fixed price cost for any surgical treatment may be provided. In general private hospitals will require payment in full before the treatment is provided.
The scale of standard expected fees for self pay uninsured patients appears below. This may be varied dependent upon the time taken, co-morbidities, the complexity and urgency of the procedure, out of normal working hours, emergency treatment and depends upon whether patients are insured, NHS, road traffic accidents, medico-legal, medical-negligence cases or from aboard. These are general prices and there may be variations, higher prices should be expected in London.

A: Yes, NHS treatment will always be available to you.
Q: Do I need a referral to get the Private Self Pay Treatment?
A: You can refer yourself. Contact us with your details and we can arrange it for you. It is preferable that if you have other medical conditions or have previously undergone surgery, advance information and a letter from your GP is helpful. Contact us if you have questions about getting a referral.
Q: Do I need private medical insurance to get the Treatment at the Nuffield Hospital, BMI Hospital or Spire Hospitals?
A: You can use your insurance policy if it covers the treatment you need, but you can also get treatment at our hospitals if you pay for yourself. Q: Do I need permission from my insurance company?
A: No in that you are entitled to seek treatment for any medical condition depending on the urgency of the condition. Your insurance policy may have stipulations, conditions, excesses and exclusions. In addition it is common experience that patients find insurance companies will direct patients to cheaper but not necessarily better facilities. Patients should be wary of being directed to particular surgeons or facilities by their insurer. Once you have a diagnosis and treatment plan you should inquire of your insurance provider whether they will cover the costs and the extent of any exclusions, excesses, co-payments and cover.
Q: I’m worried about “hidden extras”. What is included in the price of my treatment?
A: We will quote you an all-inclusive price meaning you won’t have any surprises. If additional tests or procedures are needed we will give you all the details ensuring no cost is incurred without your full consent.
Q: Can I choose my Consultant, hospital and date of my procedure?
A: Yes. Please use the contact form to provide details of your age, medical history, problem and diagnosis and address. We will contact the expert for your condition in your area and arrange for a quotation and if you wish, arrange for a consultation for you.
